Queensland Expedition Dec 1999 - Jan 2000 page 2 of 2

On our trip back across the Top End, we came back via Wyndham, Lake Argyle, Darwin,, Fitzroy Crossing, Broome, Port Hedland, Exmouth, Coral Bay, and Geraldton.

Well, okay, so the road trains I saw on my Broome trip were big, but this four trailer Shell Road train boasted 82 wheels. Don't even think of getting out the box of thumbtacks...
Lake Argyle at the Ord River Project is apparently 9 times bigger than Sydney Harbour. That's a pretty big mossie breeding ground...
Katherine Gorge wasn't worth the jump. Concrete steps and metal hand rails on a gorge walk? Nanny-state syndrome wherever you look *sigh*
Looks like it was only belly-button deep - We could've driven through it - No probs eh Mick? Katherine was under a LOT of water back in 98.
So Jules, you reckon the track is over there? The track we found into Litchfield National Park in the NT kind of disappeared. Oh well we had fun...
...getting bogged
And bogged again, this time at Black Rock Pool just out of Kununurra. Thanks for the sight-seeing tips Mavora!
Come on Mick, haven't you got the engine going yet? About the only interesting thing in Wyndham was the display of old trains.
Road impassable? The sign didn't apply to us of course (!) - so on we drove. This was the "Darwin via Dirt Road" route from Katherine in the Northern Territory...
The "Impassable" Lower Finis River was well and truly in flood, but the Terra made it through again (though not without yet more choice phrases on my part when mid-crossing we suddenly dropped down another fathom or so and I just about had to up periscope...)
Hmm, looks like a nice little hill to climb...
...Well, that little dot on the road is theTerra - it proved to be a slightly taller MOUNTAIN than we expected. Think Mt Fuji... good thing we wore our professional hiking ..uh.. sandals?
Ghost in the Tree. That's actually me standing in the middle of the Prison Boab Tree between Darwin and Derby. The eerie lighting is courtesy of a hole in the tree above my head.
Ack! How much did you say you weigh Mick?!
Hey Mr Crab, you left something behind! At Mangrove bay on the Ningaloo Reef at Exmouth a big mud crab ran under my foot and then nipped my sandals when I put a bit of pressure on him. He ran away leaving his claws behind - good thing he didn't get my toes...
And it's Mick by a nose. Actually it was all a bit much on the nose - The guy on the bike is guarding a rubbish tip on the Dirt road from Ningaloo Reef down to Coral Bay. He's been there for a few years now with travellers adding more and more items to jazz him up.
